Student AI Film Shorts Competition
Part of Futures Summit 2026
Reel Futures invites California community college students to produce original short films exploring how artificial intelligence is shaping education, work, climate, culture, equity, and community life. The competition supports creative expression, digital fluency, and workforce readiness—while honoring the human imagination and judgment at the heart of filmmaking.
Finalist films will premiere at Futures Summit 2026, with winners recognized onstage.

Why This Competition Matters
AI can enhance creative work, but it cannot replace the artist. Reel Futures is built on three core principles:

Submission Requirements
- Film Length: 2 to 8 minutes
- Format:
- Upload a screener file (MP4) – this is the digital video file of your film that judges will watch (for example, yourfilmname.mp4, exported at HD quality).
- Or provide a secure screening link (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.) with any needed password instead of uploading the file.
- Artist Statement: 250 words
- Deadline: Friday, August 14, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.
- Submissions: Upload to FilmFreeway
Films may be produced with or without AI tools; the core requirement is that they meaningfully engage with AI as a theme, question, or context.
All content must be original or properly licensed. Submissions may be entered by an individual or by a team of up to three (3) filmmaker participants once the portal is open. A maximum of one (1) entry is permitted per individual or team. Click here to view the full Contest Terms and Conditions.

Internship and Apprenticeship Pathway
Participation in Reel Futures makes students eligible for the AI Creative Internship and Apprenticeship Pathway, which offers hands-on experience in:
- AI-assisted video editing
- Script development with AI content tools
- Digital branding and marketing
- Ethical and responsible media practices
- Project planning and production workflows
Partners include iHeart Media and additional industry and innovation collaborators.

Eligibility
Open to California Community College students over the age of 18 can enter, individually or in teams of up to 3. One entry per person/team. See full rules here.
